here and beyond [poetry]

September 2, 2018

frail and incoherent you were fading fast

when a flash of clarity washed upon you

and you summoned us near

to say the farewells only you

and God

knew were impending

threads of love intertwined in a tapestry

of holding you

your breath labored and unsteady

we refused to let go

to the center piece of this puzzle

we call family

how to fit when the piece that is you is missing

your eyes abruptly fixate on something or someone

beyond earth

eternity once so enigmatic now standing in my living room

face to face with an obscurely tactile moment

I can let go for now

certain that I, too, will come face to face

with the same tangible mystery

and there I will meet you home
